NCSR Demokritos

Dr. Ion Stamatelatos is research scientist at the Institute of Nuclear and Radiological Sciences, Energy, Technology & Safety, NCSR “Demokritos”, Athens, Greece.

His research work aims on the applications of radiation in science and technology. His interests include non-destructive testing, nuclear analytical techniques, radiation protection and safety, in vivo body composition methodologies, interactions of radiation with matter and radiation dosimetry.

Dr. Stamatelatos holds PhD from the University of Birmingham, UK (1991), MSc from the University of Aberdeen, UK (1984), and BSc in Physics from the University of Patras, Greece (1983).

Dr. Ion E. Stamatelatos

Director of Research

· Participating in the EFDA JET Fusion Technology Program by performing neutron streaming calculations in long ducts and labyrinths in order to evaluate the computational tools and methods used for the design of ITER and DEMO.  Moreover, performing experiments and calculations at JET for characterization of the radiological properties and data evaluation of real ITER materials.

· Participating in the IAEA Coordinated Research Project on Large Sample Neutron Activation Analysis developing methods for non-destructive analysis of heterogeneous archaeological objects and bulk samples.

· Participating in the national research program on Novel Technologies and Integrated Design for Energy and Environmental Applications developing a rapid neutron analytical method for “in situ” characterization of contaminated soil

· Collaborating with the Medical Physics Laboratory, University of Ioannina School of Medicine in developing methods for the optimization of the radiation shielding design of high energy medical accelerators

· Participating in the teaching activities of the:  (i) Masters Program in Nuclear Security organized by the Delft University of Technology (ii) IAEA Postgraduate Educational Course on Radiation Protection and Safe Use of Radiation Sources  organized by GAEC, (iii) Inter-University Postgraduate Course in Medical - Radiation Physics, and (iv) Interdepartmental Postgraduate Studies Program on Protection, Conservation and Restoration of art objects, organized by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki

· Member of GAEC Emergencies Response Radiation Protection Committee and NCSRD Safety and Environmental Protection Committee.
